Vintage Baule Colonial Statue Wooden Statue of Man in Suit and Tie with Briefcase and Construction Worker Engineer Hat from Ivory Coast.

From our African Collection: African Baule Colony Statue circa 1950s-1960s. Colon statues, a term derived from the French statues colon ("colon" is the French noun for a colonist), are a type of folk art that stem from this time period.

The statues often show European colonial officials such as civil servants, doctors, soldiers or technicians or Europeanized middle-class Africans. They are often characterized by decorative characteristics such as helmets, suits, official uniforms or tobacco pipes. They are painted in bright or glossy colors with vegetable-based paints. These pieces are highly collectable.

This wooden statue base measures 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 and the statue measures 13 1/2 inches tall. It is painted in a bright blue jacket, yellow tie with a black and red tie, and red shorts. He has white socks and black shoes. The man is wearing a white construction type helmet/hat and has a black briefcase.

It is in fairly good condition with some wear consistent with age. Please see photos for pictures showing details of the painting, carving, and slight wear.
